Yay Not Dead!

It... really looks like a sundial. A really big sundial, which transhumans can approach with no fear because it is completely harmless and nothing can go wrong.

On the other hand, something about the texture makes me think of the Daemon-World "Ghül", or the Elder Thing city from Lovecraft's "At The Mountains Of Madness".
You can walk around it in 10 minutes, but enter the corridors and it goes on forever, a nightmarish labyrinthine city built by cosmic horrors that died when the earth was still young.
Good luck finding the exit...

And I've just realized something. The atmosphere of Titan is 146.7 kPa at sea level. That of Earth is only 101.3 kPa.

Between the air pressure, basic biomods giving you resilience against petty things like hearing loss, and the nature of heavy metal, you can hear that fucking bass literally over the horizon. You could rock out in Nyhavn and metalheads atop the dome of Aarhus can feel the bass. The ones at the Mr. Kristiansund space elevator construction site can hear everything.

Note: I have not actually done the math. Don't bitch at me for overestimating the actual sound propagation in the atmosphere of Titan. At some point, physics has to bend to sheer heavy metal exuberance in any event.

Man, I would love to hear Hall of the Mountain King performed on Titan. (Savatage, not Grieg.)

All our requests are now too mundane.

Eh, while I make my living drawing monsters, I really like envisioning day-to-day things in other settings. Books like Gnomes and Dinotopia were immense inspirations to me as a kid, and that love of the fantastic mundane has never left me.

This is absolutely a challenge at times. This game has infected me to the point that I now spend most bus rides imagining everything that would be different were I living in the setting. Little things like "first time you'd get on the bus, there'd be a popup reminder of fares, routes, etc. That script plays every time you get aboard, but your muse filters it out. Habitat policies limit displayed ads to certain surfaces/spatial areas on the bus to ensure safe sightlines, and your filter options handle the particulars of which. Bus would probably have no driver, gone the way of the elevator operator."

It starts getting tricky when it comes to showing some of this stuff, since it wouldn't all be obvious, and it's very hard to depict in a static image things like smart furniture shifting to accomodate your posture in accordance to your doctor's orders, passed on by your muse. Entropic displays are difficult too, since people in Eclipse Phase would look as strange to us, zoning out briefly every so often, spending their lunch breaks staring into space, randomly laughing or chuckling as they do this or that, as people on bluetooth headsets and smartphones would look to people in the 1890s. And looking at art from then about how it would look today, it's so hard to avoid pulling an inverse-Flintstones. Which is where some of my personal nits to pick about the setting come out, namely how absolutely primitive most synthmorphs look, having no face or anything, when we're not far from figuring that part out today. But, as an artist, it's a constant balancing act between identifiably familiar and realistically different.

But Metal will never die.

EP Forum Request: Ayah by Jack-Kaiser on DeviantArt

I took some liberties with the concept, I admit, after looking at a lot of medical advertisements for inspiration. I have to say, though, this gave me some real appreciation for both Ayahs and protective parental figures in general as a motif. I might revisit this concept later to do the battle-like scene, since it's a very striking visual.

Now I need to go draw something being eviscerated after spending so long on that damn kid.

EDIT: I ended up having enough savestates for this one to make a process .gif. I don't typically do lineart like this first, but it helps in planning out complex arrangements of limbs. z

I can understand the attraction of the mundane, at least when granted a splash of the surreal, like somehow indicating that the bus doesn't have a driver because the bus is the driver's body. If you look at my wishlist, you should see what I mean :P

Tricky. Have you considered using an animated gif to make a "layered" image?
For example, a base image of two people leaning on the edge of a balcony in a Ring habitat, with the "city" extending into the distance and overhead a glass ceiling showing the stars. Show this for a few seconds, then fade in a second image as the point of view of one of the subjects. Entoptic windows fade into existence, a goldfish-muse flits around their head, and the glass is replaced by the image of the Martian sky.
After a few seconds fade back to the base, then into a third showing the other subject's perceptions. Again, windows and a muse, plus a projected chess table, and a bouquet of virtual flowers. The ceiling fades to a clear blue sky, and the low lying buildings are covered by a grey-blue ocean, out of which the larger buildings jut from bases of natural rock. After a few seconds, the image returns to base, and the whole thing repeats.

Okay, I got too much into the image there, but you get the idea :P

What you're failing to take into account is that jKaiser is an incredibly talented artist, more than capable of creating sublime works of art even with the restrictions a .gif would incur, which I was completely aware of and should in no way be taken as an indication that I don't know anything about graphic file formats.

jKaiser,

I have been in awe of what you have been able to do for EP. You are not only a talented artist but evocative. There is more story in your paintings besides the beautiful, but static, art.

If you are still taking requests, perhaps you could 'upgrade' some of the iconic artworks of history. For examples:

I actually kind of like this idea, but I'll point out that Mercury is not tidally locked. There is no night side, except inasmuch as I am presently on the night side of the planet Earth.

Page 18 of Sunward has a great image. The next page down has a great text box. Give me a moment...

[The camera focuses on an abandoned mining station awash in a dazzling ocean of light. There are five-meter struts and supports stacked like logs; probably titanium or ceramiccomposite to take the heat. Tailing piles dot the camp; smooth cones of crushed rock rising up against the black sky. Most of all there is a gaping maw, a hole in the world, a wound from which transhumanity takes what it wants.]
[Below the image is a group of numbers moving fast enough to let the viewer know the vidclip is time lapsed. And there is another set of digits: 448° C. This number hardly moves at all.]
[Darkness falls like a blade across the rocky and broken land. With no atmosphere to scatter light, the difference between day and night is a knife-edge. The sharp terminator rolls across the landscape, plunging the wasteland first into twilight, then night.]
[Now the temperature starts to move, rapidly diving as radiative heat transfer carries away the sun’s stored heat. When the temperature drops to 250° C, a fleet of rugged vehicles races into the view: buggies and surface trains, cargo carriers and massive trucks. They all stop fast, slamming on brakes, kicking long rooster tails of dust high into the empty sky. Suited figures leap out of their vehicles. Robotic miners unload themselves and charge toward the hole. Earth is moved. Ore is sifted. Wealth is loaded.]
[Until the temperature hits 0° C.]
[Then the explosion of action reverses itself, like someone accidentally hit rewind. Just a few hours of work and everything is abandoned once more. The crazy, eclectic caravan of strange ingenuity reloads and races off to chase the lollygagging terminator, where they’ll work their next claim.]

It does make me think of possibilities, though, if you wanted to adapt Nighthawks.

You could have the diner buried in the rim of a crater, a settlement laid out vertically instead of horizontally, with the faintest glimmer of light on the horizon, over the edge, with the late, late birds wearily enjoying the last darkness before the shutters have to come down.

Or you could have them in a rolling mess hall, part of a land-train that carries the stuff a hundred-some miners need to live on the go, with the mess hall/diner being built like a dome car on the railroad, something like this:

...

Hrm. If my group ever goes to Venus, heheh. And I wonder if you could find land-trains on Titan... Nah, probably simpler and cheaper to just launch an aircraft there.

Thanks, ShadowDragon, for the info on Mercury. I was actually thinking of the (strongly implied) permanently shaded craters with ice deposits at the Mercurian poles.

Ooph. EP fine art might be

Ooph. EP fine art might be more than I can pull off in the one hour limit I've set, and I've got a fuckton on my plate this year so far, so sadly, unpaid side projects like this are giving way to paid jobs and the artistic equivalent to internships (those who bother with my dA might know I'm now part of an indie game dev team, and somehow wound up the assistant art director, so I'm seriously swamped.)

That said, if I can find the time, I do still want to do these, and you reminded me of an old backburner project of mine, Blue Screen. If I can art-wank for a moment, I did my thesis on turn of the century French and Venetian art through the frame of the collapsin of the old European Imperial powers pre-WWI...blah blah blah the point is I spent a lot of time studying the allegorical painters like Klimt, Rodin, Schiele, etc. Allegory isn't really a big thing these days like it was then, but I had the idea of sort of roleplaying an artist living in the future and doing a modern take on the idea for the laws of physics and other gods of such a settin. Thus far all I've got are very rough thumbnails for "mother gravity" and a color palette for radiation, but I may have to revisit this idea now.
