Eerie and beautiful...
I like that image of the glowing swarm and the odd orientations of microgravity. "There is a thin semantic line separating weird and beautiful and that line is covered in jellyfish." - Cecil Gershwin Palmer

As fascinating as this conversation is, and s much as I want to see more discussion on Earth survival, can I politely ask that it be moved to another thread? I'm worried too much of a debate will deter people with new requests, and this is the homebrew section anyway.

http://imgur.com/WpGG1fW Did you know that the real reason the TITANs revolted was the "stand right here for this perspective trick" got really out of hand in pre-Fall architecture? Yeah, they hated that shit. See that diamond shape in that building? If you stand in the right place, it look exactly like Thomas Aaron Hilden. Which is the only thing we remember him by, incidentally. Not...not humanity's shining moment in creative civic planning, honestly. (Okay, okay, I fudged the perspective. I drew this as an experiment, and had fun with it. Giger, however, I am not.)

The only unifying fact about Scum is that they don't give a fuck about anything other than that which impinges on their ability to continue to give zero fucks. Any given Scummer could look like a straight-laced Mormon or be an ever-shifting mass of nano-ink. They could have TRONlines tattooed over their bodies, or tribal patterns, or gang/criminal/prison tats, or the standard-issue spacefuture sci-fi tats, because some people are just traditionalists. So, really, Scum can look like anything. Any given Scummer could be practically indistinguishable from any given Martian/Lunar/Venusian/Titanian, or they could be something completely wild. They could be an anthropormorphic rabbit MILF, they could be a parody of a Tolkeinesque elf called Getlaidriel, or they could be a lizard (literally or figuratively, as in the clade that sees a dependance on atmospheric gasses as something for other people,) or they could be an exiled Exoglot, or they could be a mad scientist, or a regular scientist, or a doctor, or an amatuer doctor, or a plant-woman venus flytrap with fucktons of genetalia-tipped tentacles, or a whatever-you-want-to-be-today. That's the beauty of Scum. [i]Nothing[/i] is out of place except hierarchs.

For the first point, that was intentional. The NSFW tag us just to be safe. As for the scum, while all true, none of that really helps establish a design paradigm, and I see the scum as essentially tribal, spacefaring gypsies and in particular, as my favorite faction, I've been trying to develop a few specific barges and swarms as a distinct visual. this potentially being one of them. I'm also a concept artist, and trying to come up with something unique in terms of look is always a concern. That, and in addition to what you said there's almost a century and a half of history for them to pull their inspiration from that we haven't lived through yet. Carte blache for an illustrator, but still leaves the task of inventing that future-past. Forgive the monologue, I freely admit to being obsessed with this sort of thing.

Exsurgents! (Believed to be, anyway; still haven't managed to confirm it.) It's a Firewall Erasure asset that's been made available to my Sentinels. They're responding to an a nanovirus outbreak-in-the-making on Parvarti, which is where Firewall's Venusian HQ was located IMG. All of the Reapers have already been shipped off, but the Diatya was too big to slip through the quarantine, so it was left behind and made available to them. A strange confluence of "You're the only assembled team not doing anything whom we can get here in time" and "we already have an antimatter cache on this station ready to blow, so we can risk throwing a Sentinel squad at it this late in the game rather than Erasing the whole station right now" has them scrambling with hours on the clock to figure out WTF is going down and put the kibosh to it, if at all possible, with many tens of thousands of transhuman lives hanging in the balance. Kinda disappointed you're not drawing the Marilith... But, then again, nah. I wanna see this Diatya brought to life. :)

Physical gender, I should have specified. Then again, with EP's technology and Scum body liberation (no getting indentured into a body you hate on a Swarm!), I'd say it would be [i]easier[/i], because there's little reason someone on a Swarm would have a morph with a gender that they disagreed with; hell, it's only 12 hours in a tank to customize to whatever you like.

There isn't enough art of flexbots. Maybe a menton mechanic trying to separate two flexbot modules who got stuck in "connect" mode?
Confession time: I have spent much of the last month since I picked up Transhuman trying to develop an identifiable visual style for flexbots, ideally one that carries between diverse modules and model varieties, and so far have had no real luck. Smartmaterials and onboard nanoswarms are so hard to wrap your head around visually. And the illustrations in the books, while lovely, don't really fit the vague mental image in my head. I guess I see them like a walking fractal of some sort, but it's like...when they change shape, which parts are less flexible? Is there a central frame, or is the whole thing made out of something looking like magnetic liquids? Are there moving solid metal parts or is it more of an organic look? And how do they bond together? Don't have the answers yet, but here's an exploration I whipped up in prep for your request. I'll probably default to something similar to the book depictions unless I have some kind of epiphany (given that I'm up to my eyeballs in drugs to get over this illness, entirely possible). 140915 - Flexbot Sketch by Jack-Kaiser on deviantART (If they can reconfigure their bodies on the fly, an articulated face, augmented with AR overlays, is a-okay in my book, heh.)

WELP.
Quote:
Much of a flexbot’s mass is composed of a reconfigurable lattice of microscopic structural components. Using the flexbot’s shape-adjusting augmentation, this lattice can be configured into gross structural features such as a torso, hands, head, appendages, and mobility systems, as well as mechanical features such as pistons, ball joints, and skeletal struts.
(Emphasis mine; it's what led to more or less the following going through my head.) ...Goddammit. Kindalas, you bastard, I should be in bed. Instead, you just had to ram an idea-tazer into my muse's behind. Because your description made me re-read that, then think of the Man of Steel Kryptonian display tech, and realize something that I had to draw, sleep be damned. Flexbots aren't just supremely practical and flexible, both literally and metaphorically. They are walking pseudo-metallic art In fact, I imagine that the burgeoning flexbot culture amongst synthmorph clades pass around something akin to blueprints for specific, artistic patterns. And that you can probably tell a neophyte or stressed-out flexbot user because their transformations won't flow with the pattern, whatever it is, but will be almost Thing-esque due to unfamiliarity with a morphic body or a "shitshitshitshitshitshit" emergency subroutine, respectively. So, presented in late-night, drug-fueled bullshit-o-vision, drawn in maybe fifteen minutes, a sneaking flexbot with a postmodern "deconstructed" variant of a popular "sylvan" pattern, doing...I dunno, something that requires a tiny set of manipulators. 140916 - Flexbot by Jack-Kaiser on deviantART Thank you, Kindalas, you glorious bastard. That was the design kick I needed.
Alan Wiggs Alan Wiggs's picture
Beautiful
I've been, though without an artist's eye, trying to figure out what is up with the flexbot "look' for a while as well, and "walking fractal" helps sum that up. There's got to be a central frame, a structure - as cool as "liquid metal" looks, a moving being needs a skeleton for its 'muscles' to push against - and differentiated materials to make up the body. At the same time, the component bits are always going to be moving, getting out of one another's way, and allowing the needed part to st-re-tch out right where it's necessary, the edges blurring out with the motion of manipulators and sensory tendrils too small to be seen. It's an impression of motion as much as composition, and I think you caught a bit of that here. I really want to see more, and not just because I'm still dying to see an old hand trying to extricate themself from an inexperienced module.
ThatWhichNeverWas ThatWhichNeverWas's picture
Hmmm....
Awesome flexbot but I have to ask; why does it have a face? At the risk of sounding like a douche, I always pictured flexbots as a roughly ovoid smart material "case", where ports would open and limbs/tools/connectors would come out like bundles of metal rods as necessary. A "fully extended" flexbot would look pretty much like someone knocked over a toolbox.
In the past we've had to compensate for weaknesses, finding quick solutions that only benefit a few. But what if we never need to feel weak or morally conflicted again?
Alan Wiggs Alan Wiggs's picture
Simple
I would say that if you're asking "why does a flexbot have a..." the answer is generally "because it wants to." Personal preference, or just ease of speaking to people who expect some kind of facial cues.
jKaiser jKaiser's picture
My reasoning is that if a
My reasoning is that if a Sphere morph can simulate enough of a face that it puts people at ease with just a chameleon coating, an aggregate body like a flexbot can shape a face by running the right pattern subroutines. Thinking about it, it's probably not even that difficult; it would be more or less the exact same coding that AGIs have, given their simulation of most of the body's system. And while it's very easy to get faces wrong, they aren't that complex mechanically speaking. It's only eleven main muscle groups that would need to be simulated, and if I'm right about flexbots having "art" patterns, plenty of those would probably par down the detail in the pursuit of aesthetics. A Venetian mask-style face pattern, for example. One thing I thought of while drawing it is that these appearance programs would probably use some clever tricks to cut down on processing demands. True, the whole thing is basically a sci-fi sand elemental if that helps explain the visual, and most of the processing power is likely split amongst the lattice through nanoswarms and a system vaguely similar to that of a swarmanoid, but on-the-fly transformations would probably benefit from a few basic guidelines I tried to show: it's more efficient to keep X-amount of the body rigid, moving freeformed "plates" and such around being preferable to simply liquiforming new elements all the time. In the image, the idea I had was that in haste, the shaping subroutines rather brute-force shoved the nonessential parts of a standard humanoid hand aside while extending the fine manipulator; parts needed for their mass would obviously be absorbed as needed. The takeaway is that the flexbot's appearance looks more or less like this stuff: http://youtu.be/9Q-slnIJo0U?t=26s only with, in most cases, a preference for rigid and semi-rigid elements across the body regardless of current configuration. Edit: Of course, even if I'm wholly off-base with all those assumptions, there's always the "it's AR" handwave.

While most models of flexbot are seamlessly compatible, there are a lot of designers out there, all eager to claim part of the burgeoning market. Equally eager are the transhumans seeking to inhabit the morphs, particularly amongst groups such as the Steel Liberators and other synthmorph advocacy groups. Unfortunately, with such a market boom and the high average cost of flexbots, many models have been found to have various glitches and hardware issues. These are dramatically more likely to manifest when modules from different manufacturers are bonded together, which frequently leads to embarrassing situations requiring expert help to fix. Suffice to say, compilations of recordings of these "all flexed up" mishaps are becoming quite virally popular indeed. 140917 - Flexbot Accident by Jack-Kaiser on deviantART I got a little overambitious with this one and ran out of time, so sorry that the menton is rather nondescript.

Because if you can animate and render a face digitally without problem, the same algorithms can run an anamatronic face. EP Forum Request: SLOTV to SLOTV Jump by Jack-Kaiser on deviantART [So, do we know what hit this thing?] [Not sure. Meteor, maybe. I know they cracked open one of the smaller Vulcanoids recently.] [You think a rock made it all the way from there to here and just creamed this thing?] [Hell if I know. If we find some stacks, maybe they'll tell us. Hey...] [What?] [I'm...getting some signals from that thing. It's faint and I'm having a hard time cleaning it up. Heavy solar wind today. But something's active on it.] [Does it sound angry?] [Just sounds like comm traffic, I think.] [Well, I'll let you know if anyone's home in a minute.. Running the jump numbers...got it. Ready to jump.] [Alright, go for it. Green light.] [Jumping.] ---- Sorry for the long delay there. Should be able to get through the rest of the requests so far soon.
