A Quick Question

Hello, transhumans! I am new to the Eclipse Phase forums, I apologize if I don't know all of the etiquette.
I have a quick question: Do I add my Linked Aptitude to my Skills? Do they provide a bonus? I'm from the D&D and Shadowrun side of the tabletop genre, so I'm used to adding my attributes/aptitudes.
Also, I notice that the Skills on sample characters look a bit low...As well as damage.
For example, I see that a lot of combat skills are at 60 for characters. That seems relatively low, as I'm only succeeding 60% of the time. Perhaps I'm just used to higher level/power characters.

Anyways, sorry if this is drawn out, and I appreciate any answers to my question! Have a good day/night!

No, you don't add aptitude to

No, you don't add aptitude to skills. Your skill effectively starts at your aptitude, and a single point in a skill makes your listed skill exactly one point higher than your aptitude. So if you see a sample character with 60 in Programming, and a 20 in Cognition, then he has 40 points invested in programming.

As for why characters seem underpowered, note that bonuses to your attacks come very easy in this setting. Smartlinks and other enhancements often grant as high as +30 to attack very easily. Also, moxie can flip a die roll and turn many failures into successes. As a general rule, 40 is a good amount for something you only rarely need to do, and 60 is a decent amount for something you do fairly often. If you want to be a highly specialized expert in something, you'll want to aim for 80 or so.

Ah. There's what I was missing! Bonuses! I appreciate the quick response, and it's good to know that skills start on your aptitude. If I understood that correctly.

Yes you did. When you default on a skill (use it untrained), you only roll your aptitude. Any points beyond that raise your skill above your aptitude.

I'm glad I could help.

Skill Levels

Also note that if time is not a constraint you can add up to a +60 bonus from taking extra time (p. 117 of Eclipse Phase). So you want high skills for things you want to do FAST.

When linked skills can apply,

When linked skills can apply, use a +10 modifier if the linked skill is at 31-60, +20 if at 61-90 and +30 (I think) if at 91+. Morph bonuses and equipment can easily bring up some skills from 60 to 90, and don't forget to buy specialities for what you do often.

If you have 60 in a weapon skill, a quick aim and smartlink will bring that to 80. Compare it to the 30-40 that most people have in ranged Fray and it's quite easy to hit. Especially when the weapons do a lot of damage compared to morph durability.
