[PbP Game Interest Check]: Crystal Wind

Hi all,

I'm currently running a face-to-face campaign and due to some upcoming planned absences and irregular schedules the main narrative is going to be shelved in favor of some 'side stories' and one-shots. I've been writing some of them up for a while - my Meathab thing is going to be one of them - but this is another that's a bit more... involved and experimental with ideas for mechanics. Then I realized I could solve two birds with one stone - scratch my PbP itch AND playtest this stuff - by crowdsourcing it here.

Don't think of it as exploitation so much as ... um. Don't think of it as exploitation!

Anyway, on with the story pitch.

Rimward readers will know of Crystal Wind, a primarily-Titanian interstellar colony ship. In case you don't, Crystal Wind is being fired towards a terrestrial planet identified around Barnard's Star, about six light years from Earth, to set up the first exoplanet colony reached without the assistance of Pandora Gates. The ship is the third in a line of such ships - the first two being shot in advance carrying infomorph labour and heavy industrial equipment to set up an infrastructure for the colony. Crystal Wind itself is basically just a passenger vessel, a luxury simulspace server with an engine strapped to it, although some cargo is coming with it. The idea is that they arrive to find the luxury resort already built and luxury morphs ready to sleeve into.

Obviously things don't quite go that smooth, but I won't say more for risk of spoilers.

Who would the players be? The passengers of Crystal Wind. That means hyperelites, PC diplomats, maybe triad bosses or Titanian government officials - anyone with a lot of credits or rep to throw around to buy a ticket and fund the project. Some character concepts would fit this story better than others - why would a badass Barsoomian be here? How would he have gotten on board in the first place? Your characters can be capable - they'll have earned that c, @ or g-rep somehow - but just consider how they got to be there in the first place. Not everyone can be John Locke, somebody has to be Hurley.

Would Firewall be interested? Possibly. They might put an agent on board if they thought something was likely to follow Crystal Wind's trail back to the Sol system from it. Ozma almost certainly would, given their focus on xeno-life. But I'd say no more than one person playing that concept because I don't want this to particularly be a Firewall focused game; that would distract from the main drive of the narrative.

Anyway, if you're interested in taking part, post saying so and maybe what you're interested in playing as your character! Or if you have any questions, let me know and I'll try to fill you in as best I can without giving spoilers (I know at least one of my players reads this board)

Thanks!

Maybe

I might be able to swing this. My character is an Extropian ship captain with plenty of good rep with both the Autonomists and the Consortium.

Now he does sort of fall into that "badass Locke" category because he makes his living as a bodyguard/privateer, but that doesn't mean he's Davy Crockett. August may know his way around a fight but he's never even been on an exo-planet, and pure survival skills aren't his forte.

That could work - he wouldn't

That could work - he wouldn't be captain of Crystal Wind, mind you, just a passenger. Though how'd a freelance merc earn enough to buy a ticket in the space-Titanic? He must be doing pretty brisk business as a solo operator rather than as the owner of a microcorp. Perhaps an agreement to some security work on the colony once they land?

Oh, also, I should have mentioned - the default assumption is you'll be alpha forks and your primes stay in the solar system. If you'd like to be a prime, or a different category of fork, that's okay but let me know.

For the spread of autonomism!

Hello, Leo! At first I was like "space titanic", but then thought, "heh, I could play a fierce Titanian government tool sent on the cruise to prospect and attempt to claim the earth like planet for Titania =P "

Care to message me more info on the game? What themes do you want? Atmosphere? What are your motives as gm so we can see what you're interested in exploring?

I'm generally cool with most of the EP setting, only saying cause apparently some people hate space whales and Starfox. Starting motives for the tool might be:

+Hyperautonomy (or just Autonomists)
-Jovians
+Exclusivism
+ Colonization

"You think that of Me? I! Am the ONE WHO KNOCKS!"

Yeah, there won't be any sun

Yeah, there won't be any sun-whales when they get there... Not because I don't like them but because it's kind of hard to justify them outside an extremely narrow context. ANYWAY.

My motives as a GM? Story, primarily. I'm a writer with a few short stories published and like using writing games as a way to practice my creative muscles without necessarily feeling like 'work', so I still feel motivated. On a more cynical level, it lets me have a testing bed for story ideas, characters etc, so I'm getting something out of my effort. Oh, and the smiles and laughter of my dear subjectsimeanfriends? Yes. Obviously. Ahem.

Atmosphere and themes for this adventure... well, I suppose this is a bit too obvious to be considered a spoiler, given the story setup, but let's just say Lost and Lord of The Flies are things you should be brushing up on :P

That said, I'm drafting up some rough mechanics to represent the circumstances you guys will find yourselves in, though my narrativist side means they're quite abstracted and not too crunchy so hopefully that shouldn't be too rough.

I think an rabid @-lister would be a good source of drama so long as there's an equally rabid c-lister to play off of. Drama comes from conflict, after all. Ideally, the passengers would be quite mixed - the Crystal Wind is primarily Titanian but there is substantial Inner System capital sunk into it as well.

I'd be interested in this...

... I'd need some time to brainstorm a character though. How soon are you looking to start?

That's fine.

I wouldn't mind providing security as long as I had a few A.I. or volunteers under me. I'm good, but that kind of work can't be done by just one pair of (albeit) augmented eyes.

This seems fun. Any Idea where you are gonna run this? Will it be here?

New and very interested

I am very interested in joining this game. I am new to Eclipse Phase but have been gaming for over twenty years and am not new to pbp, though I imagine you'll have some systems unique to your board or your game in particular, every game does.

The character I have in mind is Jacqueline Cotaire, charming, irreverent and fond of all the finer things in life, Jacques is a "golden boy", a high class courtesan trained in the ways of pleasing men, women, and variations on the theme. Beautiful to the point of being nearly androgynous, he dresses well as male or female and sleeves just as comfortably as either. In a group he plays well as a "face man" but has a tendency to become bored easily and unless he has reason to, he isn't prone to taking much of anything very seriously; he is used to living in luxury, as the pampered pet of the absurdly wealthy, after all.

He's no Hurley, but he's certainly no hero, either.

Do you have room for me?

I'm interested. Are we going

I'm interested. Are we going to be playing interpersonal dramas/rooting out saboteurs on the ship before it takes off for Barnard's Star, the difficulties in colony-building when the ship arrives at its destination, or what?

I'm thinking of a self-insert who survived the hundred-twenty or so years to the Fall by early adoption of transhuman medical technologies, facilitated by the fact that he was by that time one of the Line Managers of a major airline-turned-spaceflight company (having worked his way up the ranks from a lowly Apprentic Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, which is what I'm doing now IRL), and poured significant portions of his (very high) salary into cutting-edge personal augmentations.

He survived the Fall by virtue of being in space, having become heavily involved with the spacecraft arm of the company, but his wife died during the Fall, and he wound up sinking significant portions of his personal fortune into the Crystal Wind, and wound up becoming its Chief Engineer.

Great

I think there's enough interest to make this an actual thing! Great! The character concepts I've heard so far all sound like they'd fit, though Nick you're going to be an infolife on the ship - a passenger, not a crew member. You could be an engineer when you arrive, of course.

Nick, we'll be starting on the ship (or more accurately in the ship's luxury simulspace) and move onto colonization as the main thrust of the game - getting settled in to your new home, mapping the alien world, that sort of thing.

Now, moving onto the crunchier side of things. Character creation, mainly. The first thing I want to point out is that you will NOT have your morph - you are an ego at the time play starts (simulspace and all that). You can put in requests to have certain morphs waiting for you when you arrive at the physical colony, but you won't actually have a body until planetfall. Particularly exotic morphs, or ones with extensive and complicated mods might be difficult to quickly manufacture on the colony's fabbers so if you want something super-nice, you might want to wait for a bit.

However, to compensate and to reflect your characters being relatively 'high level', with 1100 starting CP (or 11 package's worth of points if you're using Transhuman's systems). No mandates on what you can or can't have - just, as I said, try to make it make sense! And remember to leave some points aside to purchase a morph!

Alright...

Marshall Lam, a Titanian psychologist/ social worker AGI sent along to assist the team with adjusting to their new environment and help keep everyone mentally healthy during the extended stay in simulspace. Marshall is friendly and gregarious, but a workaholic and has a bit of a drug problem that he has managed to keep secret from the crew and passengers.

Spoiler: Highlight to view
Marshall also has another agenda that I'm going to message Leodensian about privately. Shame on you for peeking

Would you like us to dump our character stats here or send them via PM?

Huh? Looking at the entry on p. 145 of Rimward, it looks like there are a number of morphs onboard as well, that will be in hibernation during the trip. Are we homsteaders on the second ship (that is, in fact, entirely crewed by infomorphs), rather than the Crystal Wind proper?

The book says that while it's

The book says that while it's in the Sol system, there will be space for morphs to have farewell parties but those recreational areas will be jettisoned and left behind when Crystal Wind takes off. It also says "simulspace time dilation or hibernation" which could mean "simulspace hibernation", not physical cryosleep.

There will be some physical space for gear etc on Crystal Wind, but its main purpose is to bring the passengers egos. The previous two vessels are the ones bearing the manufacturing capacity and workforce for the colony. Also, it makes more sense from a manufacturing and energy-expenditure viewpoint to spend a few weeks prior to Crystal Wind's arrival making the bodies on-planet than waste 800 years worth of power, fuel and cargo space maintaining and refrigerating pre-existing bodies as well as shipping them across light years.

There will be morphs on Crystal Wind, but mostly synthmorphs to have ship AGIs sleeve into for maintenance purposes en-route and then to serve the colony after landing - mostly dismantling Crystal Wind itself after landing to turn it into the center piece of the colony.

Where would you like this

Where would you like this posted? Could we just link the finished sheets?

I'm sorry

It looks like I'll have to recuse myself of this game. I already have a couple other games going and I just can't take on anymore at this time.

So sorry. Have fun!

Any chance of a spare server chunk?

Hey. Finally got around to registering on the boards, might there be space for another player?

I can try have an appropriate concept together in a day or so, but I'm rather rusty on EP at the moment (only had one game previously, though it was pbp, but sadly collapsed and was ages ago in any case)
I won't be in the same place as my books for a day or possibly two, so if you're needing statted characters in before that, fair enough, never mind....but assuming that there might be a slot...yes, where should I put up a sheet?

Morph Questions

So ... questions concerning Morphs. When making characters there are some pretty important parts of the process that are Morph dependent - what do you want us to do about this? Not pick up any positive or negative Traits that are Morph dependent? And if a drawback from your background would normally have something to do with a Morph? I imagine that is easily avoided, then ... instead turned into a secret which, if revealed, would come with the appropriate stigma attached?

This means, then, that we should be planning on building our characters entirely around our Egos? That our concepts, as they currently exist, probably won't be born out in the Morphs waiting for us, so plan our characters accordingly?

What about mental disorders associated with the availability of certain Morph traits, though? Or Stats if our Morphs severely end up limiting us in that regard? I am all for drawbacks and limitations, but I would hate to see people's characters crippled because of unforeseen Morph limitations. (Imagine if someone built the concept that their character could not function in PODS into their concept, to discover that only PODS were available; for example?)

I have a few other questions I want to toss your direction in private, too, about background options and what kind of freedom we'll have in narrative over strict adherence to rules ...
