New player looking for an online group

Hey there! Picked up the books a few weeks ago and now I'm looking for an online group to play in. I'm on Central US time and am free on the weekends and anytime 4:00pm to midnight Monday thru Thursday. Hopefully someone's looking for another player or knows someone looking for one!

This also my first post so we'll see if I did that nifty user bar correctly in my sig :P

Edit: Obviously I did not do it right, haha. Anyone able to tell me how to display the bar correctly?

Re: New player looking for an online group

Hello Scummer!

I'm also new to the game and on central US time. I'm eager to try it out. I'm not part of a group, so I'm more asking the same question as you more than answering it. Maybe we can get something started.

Cool, there's at least 2 of us now. I'm definitely up for getting something started. Hopefully we get a couple more interested people in here.

Re: New player looking for an online group

I'm up for playing as well if ya'll set something up. Schedule-wise, I'm really flexible so pretty much whatever works for everyone else. I may be able to get a friend to play as well. Just uhh... PM me I guess for my contact info.

Re: New player looking for an online group

How do you play on running the show? Skype? Text-based?

scummer scummer's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

To be honest I'd be okay with either. I think Skype would work pretty well if everyone is cool with actually talking. And if not, I'm okay with something like MSN Messenger or AOL or whatever people want to use for text based. I know I'm not too keen on GMing, especially with not having played yet and not knowing the system super well yet. I'm definitely looking to be a player this go around. So we'll need someone willing to GM a game, any volunteers? :P

So what does everyone who's interested think about using Skype? Or would you prefer text? And anyone willing to GM or know someone who would be willing?

Re: New player looking for an online group

If you don't mind it not real time, I run a pbp group with a few other guys over on www.rpol.net . Unfortunately there's normally a bit of a lag between accepting players, because we have more players than GMs, but we're always open.

sinhound sinhound's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Well, even if we did want text Skype is still a pretty good IM tool anyway (The group chats, at least, tend to be easier to log and such) - and you can download a dice roller that integrates with Skype which is another boon IMO. Granted, for rolls and shit we could use like... Gametable(?) or something like that which also has chat, though being able to save the log was a bit under par the last time I used it.

As far as GM'ing, though I do have a few ideas for scenes and stuff, I'm not really up to it until I've got a better grasp of the setting and system. I am totally willing to help anyone that GM's with logistics and such if needed, though.

Extropian_Knight Extropian_Knight's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

I've never used Skype but I am down for giving it a try. I certainly don't mind talking.

I'd also like to be a player first, before attempting to GM. I've read the whole main book minus the gamemaster section at the end.

Long term though I'd like to be a GM, after I have a good feel for the game.

Covariant Covariant's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

I've been wanting to GM for a while, but if today is any indication I won't have the free time to do so for a bit. Maybe after a week or two I'll stop falling right into bed when I get home and I can run this thing. In case of that eventuality, what sort of game is everyone interested in?

GreyBrother GreyBrother's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

I have a problem with GMing, since i was ever the GM in every Eclipse Phase game.
And playing with english native speakers, certainly has its kicks (my motherlanguage is german, but i am a avid speaker/writer of the english language, so there's no problem there).

So Voicechat would be no problem for me.

scummer scummer's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Well it sounds like we've got a few people willing to play and someone willing to GM.

@ Covariant: I'm cool if we can't start for a couple weeks. As far as the kind of game goes, anything really works for me. I like the idea of checking out/exploring things, whether that be going through a Gate or investigating an derelict ship or habitat doesn't matter. I'm personally ok with egocasting too, I know some people aren't though so what are everyone's feelings on that?

@ Sinhound: I totally forgot Skype has a text part to it. The dice roller sounds like a good idea too.

It also sounds like everyone is okay with voicechat so that may be the way to go. And if we do Skype it seems pretty easy to do both like Sinhound pointed out.

Anyone have any suggestions for the game's direction? Like I said, I'm really down for anything as long as I get to play :P

GreyBrother GreyBrother's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Another important question is timezone. Something i totally forgot to check and which could complicate live-playing a lot (except i lose my job, then bets are off).

I suggest we exchange contact information, so we can discuss things in private and maybe sometime live.

As for egocasting, it depends on the character, but i have no problem with it, if i know about the "heavyness" of egocasting, since i won't design a character with "deep" roots locationwise.
A scavenger campaign could be interesting.

sinhound sinhound's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

I'm really open for whatever everyone else wants, and my time is flexible enough (right now) to be good whenever people are ready to go.

I got the new version of the dice roller, which is pretty nice (kinda hard to get it to work, but once it does... it's awesome) because only one person needs to run it and they'll act as admin, allowing everyone else to be able to roll without having it.

Also, Skype name is the same as my username here.

Covariant Covariant's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Skype would work fine for me too. I'm on CDT, so it's right around 7PM as I write this. I'll put up some contact info once I get Skype set up and pick a username. Schedule-wise, what days work best for people? I'm free evenings Monday through Thursday, usually I get home around 7, and I'm awake until midnight or so. Is there a four-hour block in there that works for everyone?

scummer scummer's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Looks like I'm in the same timezone as you Covariant. I think Extropian Knight is too. Anytime between 4pm and midnight works for me. The only day I can't game is Friday, already booked up in another group that day. I'll have to get a to set up a new Skype profile because apparently it's been long enough since I used it that I don't remember what the dang thing is.

Drat. Greenwich Mean Time here.
Skype name is chaki-chan. The full username would be "Dr. Unpr. Nekr." etc etc

Re: New player looking for an online group

Alright, so we are playing sometime between 7PM and midnight UTC-6 time (US central time), somewhere between Monday and Thursday. We look to have scummer, Extropian_Knight, sinhound, possibly one of sinhound's friends, myself, and GreyBrother sadly at UTC+1 (unless he(?) becomes unemployed). We are planning to use Skype, with a diceroller plugin. Skype also has a file transfer system, so we can exchange visual resources like maps if I ever manage to make any. Cool beans.

As for what type of game, we seem a bit up in the air. If everyone would list me their top three favorite science-fiction movies, authors, books, comics, video games, youtube clips, anime, etc, that would give me a better idea of what your sci-fi expectations are.

Random last thought: what do you think about podcasting game sessions and posting them on the Darkcast site? If not that, then I was thinking of writing up session summaries to post on the forums. We could get some good feeback that way, and all the lurkers could enjoy telling us how we're doing it wrong.

sinhound sinhound's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Very concise summary, I like that.

So... top three favorite Science Fiction things... You suck. How am I supposed to pick just three? Are we talking top three overall, or top three hard Sci-Fi? Screw it, here are three:

Firefly(Series/Movie), Transmetropolitan(Comic), Nightside(Book Series)

Obviously, there's also the Wars, the Trek, the Farscape, the Iria, the Harlock, the GS999, the Robotech, the... You get the drift. I like pretty much any Sci-Fi that isn't bogged down with needless drama (Good Drama - the kind that moves the story or provides a deeper connection to the characters is, of course, always welcome, but I find that there tends to be far too little Good Drama and far too much MTV Reality Show Drama in things nowadays.)

And as far as posting it as a podcast or write-up, I'm all for it. I'd love to see what people have to say.

Edit: Quick question for you, bossman: What's your opinion on custom morphs (For instance, any of the ones that Codebreaker has posted here)?

scummer scummer's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

That sucks about the timezone difference GreyBrother :/
Got the userbars working now, thanks sinhound!

Man, the top 3 are pretty hard to pick haha. Alright, my favorite sci-fi things in no particular order are:

Moon
Dark City
Farscape

Pretty much anything with a good story to be honest.

I'd be cool with the podcast or summaries as well.

Covariant Covariant's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

sinhound, I'm ok with using custom morphs with one caveat: Post it on the boards and see what people have to say about it first. I'll let the peanut gallery decide for us.

Re: New player looking for an online group

LMAO. I love that line of thinking. I didn't really have anything planned, I just wanted to see - if it came down to it, if the concept deemed it necessary - what your verdict would be.

Well lets see... considering i DO manage to game with you:
- Mass Effect
- Cowboy Bebop
- Warhammer 40k

Just to chip in - podcasting/writing session summaries and putting them on Darkcast or here sounds awesome. I would definitely read/listen to them.

Good luck with your game guys.

Re: New player looking for an online group

Ok, so boiling it down to three favorites isn't any easier for me. Let's go with:

Author: Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash / Diamond Age)
Artist: Tsutomu Nihei (Blame! / Biomega)
Game: System Shock 2

Overall: I love cyberpunk, horror, any cool /cutting edge experimental stuff.

I am fine with recording / podcasting. That sounds like a great idea, actually.

Covariant Covariant's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

My favorites three at the moment would have to be:

-Vernor Vinge (author)
-The Sarah Connor Chronicles (tv show)
-Sunshine (movie)

Another question before we get started on character building: Who is your favorite antagonist (from any setting), and who is your favorite protagonist (also from any setting)?

I'm thinking that we will be playing somewhere around Mars. Any thoughts or preferences on that?

scummer scummer's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Let's see here.

For antagonist I'd have to say Loghain Mac Tir from Dragon Age: Origins. I like bad guys who aren't just flat out evil, there's reasons they're doing what they're doing.

Protagonist would probably be Crichton from Farscape. What can I say, I like the witty heroes.

Around Mars would definitely be okay with me. I was actually kind of eye-balling the Martian background yesterday when I was toying with a couple character ideas.

sinhound sinhound's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Definitely gonna have to second scummer with the John Crichton one (Though definitely the him from later seasons that's acclimated to their existence and isn't a blundering fool). Really though, any hero with just the right amount of insanity works for me (Mal Reynolds, for instance). Granted, they only really work if they've got other people on the team to balance them out... Honorary mention to Anti-Heroes, though.

As for antagonist? Well, the ones that think they're doing the right thing. Taking from Farscape, Scorpy would fit the bill pretty damn well. I mean, Staleek and Grazya were just kind of.... there, and Bialar was way too - understandably - revengy (I gotta give it to him, though, he was a much better hero than he was a villan). At least, that's the antagonist that I identify with most. Of course, the antagonist does have to have a bit of mystery surrounding them or where would the fun be?

And yeah, I can be good with Mars. Granted it's not like you're stuck there after we get into it. Wherever you feel you have a story you'd like to tell... just... take us there, you know? I mean, you've gotta be having fun, too. Personally, instead of what we like, you should be asking us what we hate.

Covariant Covariant's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

That's a good point. What do you hate in a sci-fi story?

Re: New player looking for an online group

So did this ever get off the ground? I'd be interested.

sinhound sinhound's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Anyway, I decided to ask my friend your questions just in case (he's definitely willing to play if we've got a spot):

-----
Top 3: Blade Runner, Transmetropolitan, The Thing, Dr. Who

Protagonist / Antagonist: House / House (lol)

Protagonist: Spider Jerusalem

Antagonist: The Dream Lord from Dr Who.

Hate: "****ing space elves. Space dorfs are okay though... and space magic, because wtf? Psi, I get, but magic?"
-----

As for me? I know I'm gonna be flamed for this but... you know... the New BSG (Caprica was a bit better... but... eh) and SG:A? Remember how I said MTV Drama earlier? Yeah...

Azlinea Azlinea's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

So is there still room for another player in all of this? I'm not sure what everyone else is comfortable with player count wise but I thought I might ask. If nothing else you can put me on some sort of waiting list.

sinhound sinhound's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Actually, that list seems like a good idea... Mods should create some sort of topic where people can post whether they want to gm or play (or both) and create lists for both, and then groups can be formed organically from there... I mean, there's clearly enough demand for it.

GreyBrother GreyBrother's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

I think i have to officially resign. Timewise, i won't get unemployed (which is good in a way, since i can eat and stuff) and second do the timezones really f*ck this up if we'd be going at it in a live-chat manner.

I know the EP rpol.com game has that going on. Its more or less a sandbox game if I am thinking of the right one. So a group of players say they want to play, a GM says cool lets go and they play in the same universe as the other gms.

We could coordinate with them and add to their list of people that want to pbp, I personally like it, and create a new list for people that want to do live gaming, which I am also interested in.

All that being said I am going to answer those questions from earlier:

Top 3: Pandorum, District 9, Soft Apocalypse
Protagonist: Sherlock Holmes from the most recent British series, not the American film
Antagonist: The evil monkey from Rise of the Planet of the Apes, forgot his name. I know he really wasn't an antagonist in that film but I don't like him as an antithesis to Caesar.

Hate: I absolutely hate technophobic scifi like the outer limits, the most recent ones as I have not watched any of the earlier series, and the idea that Dresden Codak is parodying in his comic 'Caveman Science Fiction'.

Extropian_Knight Extropian_Knight's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Yes, Pandorum! I love that movie. I was hoping someone would mention it, Azlinea.

Ok, here it goes:

Protagonist: Case from Neuromancer. He's world-weary hacker cut off from the 'net who wants a more interesting life.

Antagonist: Doro from the Patternmaster Series. He's this immortal, incredibly lonely being. Believing himself to be a human mutation, he abducts and cross-breeds humans to try to recreate another of his kind. Kind of a cool guy, but a definite control freak.

Hate: I also hate technophobia (at least when it's the over-arching theme--dealing with Jovians is ok ;)) Also, any story that is just too black & white. I like dramatic tension, grey zones, hard choices, and the like.

Azlinea Azlinea's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

I was entirely taken by Pandorum and I still think that the hand crank station was one of the most amazingly utilitarian device I have ever seen in any piece of fiction. Or reality really. I think it partly has to do with the fact that it completely surprised me, I was going in for a kinda campy jump-happy space horror and found an interesting psych horror instead.

Yeah I don't mind dealing with the Jovians either, although I still do not like them. Technophobia gets people no where. Techno-pragmatism or techno-realism are ok though.

When was the patternmaster series written? I haven't heard of it and the character you mentioned sounds very interesting.

Yeah, timezones suck for getting people together live.

scummer scummer's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

I think I'm in agreement with everyone on the technophobia. It works in some cases but usually doesn't come off quite right. The other big thing that gets me is more of an annoyance than a hate. I always think it's weird when everyone acts professionally in a future setting, like somehow because of all the advancements people have lost the ability to relax and act casual. I know there's not a ton of instances when this happens but it drives me crazy when it does. I really hate it when there's very little depth to the story too, there's gotta be something more going on to keep me interested.

I'm a huge fan of conspiracies and the unknown.

Are there any general guidelines we should be looking at as far as character concepts go?

Azlinea Azlinea's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Yeah depth is always good too.

I'm hoping not much on the restrictions, I have an idea for a neo-pig ego hunter who is part of a copy-collective.

Extropian_Knight Extropian_Knight's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Azlinea,

The Patternist series was written between 1976 and 1984. The books were not written in chronological order with regards to the story (Butler went back and filled in gaps, wrote prequels, etc). Wild Seed is the best place to start. It's the fourth book, but the earliest point in the story.

You'll often see the whole thing anthologized as Seed to Harvest. Check it out :)

Azlinea Azlinea's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Ohh thanks. Is there any merit to reading it in the order that the books were written in? Like the Narnia series, I think, should be read in order of written even though its not chronological order. I haven't finished that series, probably never will, but the sense of discovery of the links between past and 'present' is actually important.

Too many books to read. Need a fork.

Extropian_Knight Extropian_Knight's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

When they anthologized it, they put it in chronological order and I think it reads best that way. If you could only read one, definitely read Wild Seed. In my opinion it's the best written.

Don't even get me started on too many books. With the Borders down the street liquidating everything, I'm buried in them right now!

Re: New player looking for an online group

What character concepts do people have so far? Are we interested in Firewall agents, struggling hypercorp personages, singularity seekers, some twisted mixture of transhumans struggling against the immortality blues, Barsoomian revolutionaries? I have a number of ideas brewing, so knowing your character concepts a bit will help me to plan.

scummer scummer's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

So my favorite factions so far are Scum, Barsoomian, and Firewall; though it seems that Firewall sort of takes it's member from wherever so I guess a combination would work for me too haha. I have 2 main concepts I'm playing around with right now. A Barsoomian saboteur that specializes in using "reclaimed" tech from the corps against them or a Scum merc that deals in private security for whoever has the rep or cred and is just waiting to get called in on that crazy Firewall op.

Obviously though I'm not restricting myself to either of these, they still need a ton of work to add some personality other than the stereotypes, just kind of the first couple concepts that came to mind. I'm kind of a sucker for any of the Autonomist and Firewall angles to be honest.

Regardless of the character I play I'm pretty sure I'm going to throw in the "who am I really?" psychological element and play on the idea that it wears on someone's mental state from switching bodies all the time and using back ups. Basically someone who has difficulty coming to terms at times with the morph issues. "Is there another me out there somewhere? Am I the original?" That kind of stuff.

sinhound sinhound's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

Well, I've got a few... One's an OSC/Scum (Real name [Redacted], Alias: H1v3m1nd) who has a large focus in programming, robotics, and electronics. Obviously, he has most of the nanoswarms (Protean, especially), and one of those shrouds that protects the person's identity. There's a lot more to the background, but that's the basic concept and I don't want the other players knowing everything yet.

The other is similar, but different, Uplift/Argonaut basically based on Lexington from Gargoyles.

Azlinea Azlinea's picture
Re: New player looking for an online group

I'll say I am biased towards anything where I can play an Autonomist and all of your ideas allow me to play some sort of autonomist so I'm not particular there unless you want a vote.

As for characters I have a few ideas. The first being a neo-pig (Panopticon) ego hunter that was mentioned earlier. She is an anarchist who takes cases that deal primarily with stolen research or with researchers in general. She does take contracts from others in the Outer System, never any from the inner system if she can help it, and deals entirely in Rep. She is a proponent of the Banyan lifestyle, where you alpha fork yourself and send them off to learn in parallel with other versions of yourself, and is part of a copy-collective with as many as a dozen other versions of herself at any one time. Her motivations are -Credit +Banyan +Researchers

The other character is a brinker and partial exhuman. Well he wants to grow up to be an exhuman some day. AGI that inhabits a spider-like synthmorph and believes he is destined to be the ultimate insect life form, metal or bio. He is a bit of a construction expert and has an aesthetic eye that has gain him some F-rep to his chagrin. To go along with his construction expertise he also carries a few hives with him and protects them like they are his children, so much so that many think he has some sort of mental deficiency dealing with the nanites. His motivations are +Hive (establishing one) -biochauvinism +Autonomy

I don't think either of those characters fit into all of the mentioned settings but Ill be happy to create new ones (favorite part of RPing really).

There are a total of 3 GMed games going on right now in the RPOl EP forum, and it looks like most of them are nearing completion (which means soon more openings) probably within a month or so, one or two might have openings to replace players who've dropped out, and there seems to be a fourth one that is petitioning for players with the idea of starting soon.
