Musing on Muses

I'm not sure if questions like this have been answered in another topic but reading the character sheet and the intro fiction got me wondering. Muses are, from what I gather, AIs that float around in the character's head (their cortical stack I assume? or something else) and do... stuff, like scanning and sending messages like in Lack, but I'm certain there's more to them than that, which has spawned the following questions in my mind.

1) What exactly are the functions of a Muse from not just a character's perspective, but also the player's persepctive, so... setting and rules abilities and bonuses (or penalties)?
2) Does basically everyone in the EP setting at least have access to the possibility of a Muse, or is it something that's ging to be unique to Firewall PCs?
3) Who exactly is going to be in control of the Muse as far as roleplaying goes, just curious about this one because I think it could provide some very interesting roleplaying oppurtunities if the GM controlled each character's Muse.

Muses are personal AI

Muses are personal AI assistants that almost everyone has. They reside in each character's mesh inserts. AI has been around long enough that almost everyone has grown up with a muses since they were a child, so it's often a best friend/confidante or omnipresent angel-on-your-shoulder type thing.

1) They can handle a wide range of mesh activities for each character, such as online research, and they also typically actively monitor the character's personal area network against intrusion/hacking. In game terms, the character can tell the muse to do something, and the muse's skill then gets used for the test.

2) Almost everyone has one.

3) That's left up to your group. I'd expect most GMs would run the muse themself as an NPC, but they could also be considered an extension of the character and placed fully under player control.

Do you get a muse for free, or do you have to pay the listed costs in the book to get one? They seem rather pricey.

Transhumans will one day be the Luddites of the posthuman age.

Help me get my gaming fix, if you want.

From what I've read everyone gets one at character creation for free... and has had it since childhood.

p.137:
"Every character starts off with one piece of gear for free: a standard muse"
