[LFG] SF, Bay area, California

Hiya everyone, I'm looking to put together or join a weekly Eclipse Phase game here in the bay area. Weekdays after 6pm and weekends are ok. Willing to host at my house in San Leandro, it's BART accessible. I've got a dedicated gaming room, minis, maps, etc. Message me here or if interested.

Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

It's been four months might as well bump this.

I'm still looking to play Eclipse Phase. If someone was willing to run it I'm sure I could convince my current group to join.
I'll be at DunDraCon in a couple weeks so if anyone wants to say hi and discuss EP in general or a game specifically I'd be happy to. Already pre-reg'd for the EP game that Friday.

Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

I'm interested in joining or starting an EP game, myself (albeit bi-weekly, due to work scheduling). I'm in San Jose and would prefer something in the South Bay area (given the Milpitas BART is still years away), but might be willing to commute as long as I could avoid rush hour.

I live at the midpoint between Union City and Fremont. What kind of schedule are you all looking at?

Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

I'm not sure. I suppose we should organize around a GM.
I'm pretty flexible on all accounts. Bi-weekly is fine, it's better than not at all and gives me a chance to run something else on the off weeks. San Jose is fine I used to live there four years ago and I made that commute from Hayward to San Jose every day for a year so I know it well. Maybe we can alternate.

ssfsx17 is in a good position either being picked up on the way down to SJ, or vice versa coming up here.

Well my Pathfinder game is winding down. We're on part 5 of 6 of Serpent's Skull AP, which sucks hard btw. Needless to say I'm eager to switch. That's Sunday afternoons till evenings, how about then? Traffic is light to nonexistent and I can likely bring in three more people.

Otherwise I'm open to suggestions.

Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

Every other Sunday afternoon/evening would work fine for me. I prefer late-ish on weekdays, but I know that doesn't work with everyone's schedule and I can be flexible as needed. My place in San Jose isn't well set-up for gaming as of yet, so unfortunately I can't offer a space. Given the other interest in this thread is East Bay and Fremont, it might be more fair if I commuted, anyway.

In terms of organizing around a GM... I suppose that depends on what people have in mind for the campaign/play-style. For my part, I've not played EP yet so there'll be some system learning involved. As a GM, I tend to run pretty loose, player-driven campaigns. If players' tastes trend towards more serious, heavier story settings, someone else would be a better fit. I am perfectly happy to run, but I wouldn't want to put together a game that doesn't fit the personalities in our potential group. As a player, I enjoy playing and adapting to (most) any style.

Draconis Draconis's picture
Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

No worries. My house is set up for gaming and is quite available. I was just trying to be fair with the commute and all.

Nobody I know has played EP yet, so there will be system learning all around. I wouldn't worry about that.

I actually prefer player driven games. I've grown weary of bland prewritten mods that force players to do logical gymnastics just to participate in the weak incomprehensible plot. (Serpent Skull AP I'm looking at you)

I suggest gatecrashing then, at least initially since it is the most open and adaptable setting.

Agreed on Gatecrashing

My schedule is looking increasingly like Tuesday nights will be the best time, other days now being taken up by other games. Monday nights might open up in a month, depending on various factors. Also, for GM duty, I call "not it!"

Ah, my old stomping grounds. Used to live in San Jose and hang out at GameKastle.
I'd be willing to drive down that way on say Saturdays for instance. Weekdays might be a little more difficult as 101, 880 traffic blows. They need to finish the BART extension faster. }: )

So that is...Four, if Undiurnal is still in? Three actives, at least.

Every other Sunday is/was Undiurnal's request.
ssfsx17 is/was talking about Tuesdays.
Draconis suggested Saturdays.
I'm good with weekends, semi-flexible on weekdays.

Are these up to date? or have schedules changed?

I haven't GMed anything in a long rotten while and doubt I should begin with something this convoluted and subtle without having some player experience.

Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

If Tuesdays evenings work for all involved, I'm headed out of town this week, but will be back for July 26th, if people wanted to get something started then.

Location-wise, somebody is going to be commuting :(

For my part, anywhere South Bay within reach of VTA is easy for me (and, hey, BART should be done in time for the Singularity, so there's that). Other places, I'd need to carpool with someone or, alternatively, need a start time around 7pm at the earliest, as the better half uses my car for her commute.

Re-Laborat Re-Laborat's picture
Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

Bleah. My car just threw me the 'check engine light' and I haven't got the funding to put it in the shop.

That limits me to South bay or carpooling. I can bike/bus darned near anywhere.

If we can arrange a location that I can reach, I'm good for Tuesday the 26th.

I think there was a semi-affirmation of a gatecrashing run. Did we settle on a GM?

Draconis Draconis's picture
Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

Ok South Bay it is. I'm ok with that for the near future. I guess I'll get ssfsx17 along the way.
Now just pick a place and time. Posting an ad up on the GameKastle forums for a couple more players couldn't hurt either.

Undiurnal graciously offered to GM I believe. I do however need more details on the campaign/setting premise so I can tinker with some stuff.

Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

And that's why I tried to start talking 'plan' a week ago. Well. Perhaps something'll pop up at the last minute.

It's possible that operating under the assumption a time Tuesday evening will be announced, that you long-commuters might do well to schedule an if->then pick-up schedule and plan.

Undiurnal stated earlier that his place wasn't set up for GMing, nor is mine, plus I have cats and a roomie sleeping on the couch currently so space is an issue for me.

What's the current situation with Game Kastle's gaming room? Because that sounds like it is liable to be the best option.

undiurnal undiurnal's picture
Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

Yikes... The EP forum stopped sending me forum updates for some reason; I thought this thread had gone dormant again. Thank you, AD, for letting me know it's active.

I have no idea the situation with the GK gaming room, though it's potentially a good option.

I'm still up for GM'ing. Session-wise, if we could carve out a three-four hour block, that would be good. Those of you commuting can dictate the time, I think. If we're going to be at Game Kastle, I can get there whenever. If GK isn't viable, there might be some gaming-friendly coffee places around... anyone know of one?

Regardless, if we can't get something together, er, tomorrow, we can start laying the groundwork via email, if people like. I can brief my idea for the game, and character creation can be done... undiurnal -at- gmail -dot- com.

Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

Good to hear from you.

I don't get any sort of alert from this site that a thread has been replied to. I just lurk on a regular basis and refresh threads/forums that I'm interested in. Fortunately this particular branch of the forum updates rarely, so it's quite obvious from the forum top-level when something has changed.

I'm looking at what passes for GK's website and it doesn't seem to have been updated in quite a while, but the hours it lists only run 'til 9pm.

Given that people are commuting from the frozen north, that doesn't seem terribly adequate. I'm not sure about coffee places in the immediate vicinity of GK, honestly.

Of course, no matter where you are, there's always Denny's. <_< They run late to 'always on' and tend not to be pushy about people sitting around for hours at a time, though it's nice to be sure if your host/ess goes off shift that you get them their tip first. Some of them make large/late night groups 'pay at order' due to people sneaking out, but I don't particularly mind that...As long as they keep topping off my coffee.

Draconis Draconis's picture
Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

I'm ok with GK or whatever to get the ball rolling. There is a Denny's nearby GK, I've done that before.
If ssfsx17 can private message me with an address and number I can pick him up on the way down.

I've spent the last two weeks playing around with making a character as it was my first. Wanted to get the rules down and all. Hopefully just minor adjustments are needed to bring things into line.

undiurnal undiurnal's picture
Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

Yeah, I've not run EP before, so it'll be a bit of learning-as-we-go. The way I'm trying to set things up, most any character idea should be possible to integrate. Gatecrashing is something which may happen later in the campaign rather than at the outset, though, so creating a super morph won't be necessary.

More important will be a strong character concept and some level of backstory, so I can integrate those things in going forward.

Re-Laborat Re-Laborat's picture
Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

From reading many campaign notes online, I've noticed some common starter trends:

1. Everyone makes classic 'this is my buff character, and this is all of their equipment' characters, with tricked out morphs and loads of hardware, and then they facefall when they get egocast far, far away and never get to see their sweet, sweet morph and specialized expensive equipment again.

2. Everyone sees this clever trap on the part of the game designers and instead makes an AGI hacker who has skills out the wazoo. The party fails its first mission because no-one brought a gun and no-one has fingers to pick it up with anyway.

A good party mix somewhere in between seems to be the way to go. That way in some situations the ultracompetent AGI can shine, and in other situations the people with the very fancy high-end morph and all the expensive hardware can shine.

Just my two cents. :)

I definitely like to hear things like 'make a backstory so I can work it in'. That's my favorite flavor.

I've fiddled around a bit and generated a few characters, and I think I understand the game to some degree. I'm perfectly happy to fill in whatever party role others are unsure about.

Draconis Draconis's picture
Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

Re is entirely correct and is quite astute in his appraisal. There are glaring inherent flaws in the game. I dislike resleeving and morph changing intensely and would resist doing it unless absolutely necessary. This is why I suggested gatecrashing.

I lean heavily towards #1 in his post with a custom morph inherently important to the concept I had in mind. But hey I'm flexible and have a backup plan. I just hope it can engage my interest.

So I guess we can discuss the campaign in email as it's currently 12:40 and there's no detailed plan of yet. I have a business meeting at 3pm in south SF today. I can still make a late meet and greet at GK say 7-8 ish but I need some concrete meeting plans. Leaving south city and fighting 101 or 880 traffic down there after 4pm on is not going to be fun.

Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

At risk of seeming arbitrary by simply presenting people with a schedule at effectively the last minute, I would like to suggest the following:

1. Meet/greet/talk character/campaign at GK 1350 Coleman Ave, Santa Clara, CA 95050 at 7pm.

2. When GK closes (9pm?), Adjourn to Denny's‎ at 1745 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA 95050:

1. Head northwest on Coleman Ave toward Carl St (0.1 mi)
2. Take the ramp on the left onto De La Cruz Blvd (0.4 mi)
3. Take the El Camino Real ramp (0.1 mi)
4. Slight left onto El Camino Real (Destination will be on the right)

3. Profit.

It seems so much simpler than the Normandy option.

I will be wearing a cap with a Nuclear Fleet Dive Team badge, since the odds of someone else turning up with one are vanishingly small.

Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

Still recruiting, definitely.

With regards to gatecrashing, it is *definitely* available, if the players take the game that way. It won't be the very initial set-up, but depending on choices the players make, it could go that way pretty quickly. Or not.

Re-Laborat Re-Laborat's picture
Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

Howdy.

We haven't strictly settled on characters because both players in attendance at the last meet had multiple character concepts and weren't sure what would work best...

Having created a few. { Okay, many. :) } I offered to 'bat cleanup' in case others had specific roles they wanted to fill, as I'm okay with just about anything. Some discussion was had in regard to campaign ideas, likes and dislikes. One thing which came up of significant mention was a dislike for egocast situations which greatly disadvantaged characters that had put considerable starting investment into a morph and which the player strongly identified with the morph as well as the ego. See also: "If I'd wanted to play a case morph with no support and no gear, I'd have rolled one."

Some things I have floating around in my current closet full of unassigned characters:

- Neo-Raven Ultimate Executive Security Specialist who has been psychosurgically altered to (1) avoid psychosurgery and (2) not cause unnecessary harm. (Really the only 'dedicated combat' character I've ever generated for EP.)
- Dolphin bot-jammer rigged for vacuum work and situated on a walker exoskeleton. Because oghod. Dolphins. In. Space.
- AGI Psychosurgeon/Interrogator who loiters in his pre-Fall commander's body and tends to think of it as a 'trophy'. Don't ask where his CO's original ego went.

Characters I've statted but haven't really put together background notes for (if something here screams "I want to play that!!!" at someone, just let me know and I'll toss you a copy of the excel spreadsheet and you can mutilate it how you like).
- Hyperelite Socialite Fence/Middleman/Negotiator/Fixer type. Luna, high-end black-market traffic between street-level and corporate officers and management who Should Know Better.
- Drifter Scum Deep-Space Salvage Operator. What it says on the tin.
- Lost Brinker Singularity Seeker. Dangerous company. TITAN technology is an opportunity with risk, not a menace...Unless you're already extinct and don't know it. Most people are.
- Re-Instantiated Barsoomian Anticorporate Activist. Not a bomb-thrower or a banner waver. Someone much more problematic. The sort of person who actually goes digging for dirt via surveillance and in person to prove what sort of shenanigans the corps are up to.
- Martian Argonaut Zone Ranger. Because quarantining a TITAN in a pretty little map-grid doesn't make it go away. It just gives it time to build in isolation. Someone needs to keep track of these things and make sure they aren't getting worse. Which they almost certainly are.

I've also statted up an OSC Jovian bot-tech/puppetmaster/jammer type but that might be difficult to fit into a group given Jovian intolerance and intolerance of Jovians.

Re-Laborat Re-Laborat's picture
Re: [LFG] SF, Bay area, California

So, we are coming up on yet another alternate Tuesday.

Game Kastle, 7PM Tuesday.

ssfsx if you can get hold of someone, I think Draconis has offered to carpool.

gtjormungand I have no idea what your whereabouts/transport situation is. Game Kastle is here: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1350+Coleman+Ave.+Santa+Clara,+CA+95050 on the North side of Coleman opposite the Staples in what looks like an industrial park.

Character-wise, Draconis has a sort of Escort/Bodygiard/Assassin type with a bit of Biology and Xenoarchaeology.

I have several characters I can choose from, so I will defer to people who are setting up their first...If there is a specific role you're looking for, just say so!!! Page 23 of the Core Rules has several archetypes mentioned. Not all of them are easily defined...Picking out the distinctions between Explorer, Archaeologist, and Singularity Seeker can be tricky. Similarly, the difference between a Security Guard, a Soldier, and a Cop are a bit fluid. Fixer and Black Marketeer are another high-overlap role, as are Smuggler and Pirate. Greer has stated that he'd like characters with some background that he can integrate into the campaign, so when in doubt I'd focus more on a character background you will enjoy playing than 'Do I have a balance of stats that makes me fit 'X' role in the party?'.

I personally think it's often useful to have a variety of academic skills in the party, but that's just me. Greer is the GM and may have other ideas and advice about focus.

Gatecrashing will apparently be a possibility down the way, but at this point it is sounding like it is likely to be inner-system, and that while some egocasting may be involved on occasion, people who spend a lot on toys and morphs WILL get to use those most of the time.
