New here.
I was told about this site from a friend and I am unsure of a few things.
1. Do I need a rulebook to play?
2. Is there one (rulebook) available online?
3. Is there any software I would need to download?
4. How would one go about actually playing this game?
I would appreciate any assistance given to me in answering my queries. Thank you.
Maptool also provide good help for the maps and dicerolling.
There is one in french called Rolistik that is quite handy, and one that I don't remember, but was currently under beta trial.
The Rulebook is also available for free from many of the usual places one would normally find such a rulebook illegally. Posthuman seed their own torrents, it is not illegal, you can try before you buy.
If you have a demonoid account, http://www.demonoid.me/files/details/2625856/37456752/ is a link to the official torrent. If you do not have a demonoid account, PM me and I will send you a public dropbox link for it.

I don't have a demonoid account and I was able to download the 3rd printing of the core book, so try before asking, I think only the really new and recent stuff requires login.

Well, let's start from the basics here. Please pardon me if I'm covering ground you're already familiar with, but I'm not sure what you already know. Roleplaying games as a genre of game (which Eclipse Phase falls under) are an interactive game usually involving around 4 or 5 friends, sometimes as few as 2 or as many as 10 or more. It can be described as Interactive Storytelling combined with Adlib Acting, using a mathematical system and some random number generation to add some unpredictability and structure to your story creation. One player takes the role of referee, and generally tell the story - the others take charge of the main characters of that story. So imagine trying to tell a story with a cast of characters who go off on their own choices while you work.

To answer your questions specifically here:
Technically no, but if you want to play in the Eclipse Phase setting or system, having access to a book for reference will probably help greatly. (Many gaming groups will have only one player who owns the book, the others may borrow.)
Yes, see DriveThru RPG for PDFs. It is also available in hardcopy for order through various bookstore sellers such as Amazon. Or you can ask your local gaming store to order a copy (they might start carrying the line).
No, but depending on how your group chooses to play it may help. If you have a group that is spread out across the country a program like Trillian, AIM or Skype can be a real help.
Get together a small handful of creative friends and a copy of the book. (Or make some friends on the forums here and ask to join a game online.) Bring yourselves, your enthusiasm, some paper and pencils to write down ideas and maybe some dice. Then - have fun.
I fix broken things. Should you need to get a feature on eclipsephase.com fixed, mention it on the suggestions board and we'll look into it for you. I also fix Darkcast and the Darkcast Wiki
